W&Z stimulates the multifunctional use of the waterways and looks after security aspects such as flood risks. The short-term course covered topic such as mobility, intermodality, logistics costs and modal choice, network design, barge and rail operations and transport policy. 7. Zooming into the economic significance of the Belgian dredging industry

Recently, ITMMA concluded a report on the economic significance and the competitive position of the Belgian dredging industry, a study commissioned by the Belgian Federation of Dredging Works (Federatie der Baggerwerken vzw). The Belgian dredging companies account for about 28 per cent of the open world market (based on turnover). Both DEME and Jan De Nul are world players in the market with a joint turnover of nearly € 1.4 million in 2003 and a direct employment of about 4700 fte. On top of this, the dredging industry generates an indirect value-added in other economic sectors of € 150 million and an indirect employment of approximately 2000 fte. The Belgian dredging industry is highly innovative, both in terms of dredging techniques as well as transfer of know-how.

    8. Update on research at ITMMA

Private and public research projects at ITMMA fuel the interactivity and practical relevance of education and research. ITMMA is working together with the Antwerp Maritime Academy on a simulation model for the maritime access to the port of Antwerp to be used during classes and for research on optimizing port performance. Another research project, this time in co-operation with Hogeschool Antwerpen, involves a pre-feasibility study for an underground transport system between the left and the right banks of the Antwerp port. A few months ago, a report on ‘Strategic Port Development Projects’ was finalized in the framework of the SPIN project (Stimulation and Promotion of Inland Navigation) of the European Commission. Recently, a two-year project on the preparation of a long-term vision for the Flemish ports policy commissioned by the Ministry of the Flemish Community was finalized. In co-operation with the main contractor Resource Analysis, the input of ITMMA mainly focused on the assessment of market developments and its impact on port policy. In association with the Flemish Institute for Logistics, a study on port labour in the Flemish ports is about to go public. ITMMA is also involved in the project evaluation process of the Westerscheldt Container Terminal in the port of Flushing (the Netherlands). ITMMA also concluded two major industrial research projects on optimizing the production and distribution network for an American and for a Scandinavian multinational.
