Legal education in Belgium traditionally consisted of a two year programme (candidate of laws), followed by a three year programme (licensee of laws). As a result of the implementation of the Bologna Agreement, this structure was gradually replaced by a three year bachelor and two year master's programme from the academic year 2004-05 onward. Consequently, in 2008-09 the Licensee of laws programme was offered for the last time.
