As of the academic year 2007-08, students with an LL.B. degree may enroll in the two year Master Programme, certainly if they wish to pursue a legal career in Belgium (advocate, notary public, judiciary). The Master's degree will replace the existing equivalent degree of Licentiate of Laws. Although a number of courses is taught in English, the teaching language in the Master Programme is Dutch.

Master of Laws

With the exception of a number of mandatory courses, master students in Antwerp can compose their programme along either of the following lines:

  • completion of a general programme;
  • specialisation in one of the following modules:
    • civil law
    • procedural and criminal law
    • commercial, economic and company law
    • public law
    • international and European law
    • tax law
    • social law

Students may also enroll in the Erasmus/Socrates exchange programme with one of our foreign partners.

Mandatory courses

The programme comprises 7 mandatory courses:

  • Foundations and Auxiliary Sciences
    • Ethics and Deontology
  • Law Courses
    • Fundamental Rights and Freedoms
    • International Private Law
    • Comparative Law
  • Insolvency, including Securities
  • Legal Skills and Masterproof
    • Negotiating and Mediation
    • Masterproof

Optional courses

1. The students choose one of the following fundamental and auxiliary courses:

  • Legal Philosopgy
  • Legal Psychology
  • Sociology of Law
  • Legal History
  • Legislative Process
  • Economical Analysis of Law

2. The students choose three module semesters within a range of 7 modules, each related to a specific field of law. Each module semester consists of two advanced courses (12 cred.), one comparative and international course (3 cred.) and one specialised course (3 cred.). The modules are:

  • civil law
  • procedural and criminal law
  • commercial, economic and company law
  • public law
  • international and European law
  • tax law

Students who choose two module semesters of the same module get this major mentionned on their diploma. Students who follow all three module semesters of the same module obtain this specialisation on the diploma.

The masterproof at the University of Antwerp requires students to combine their academic legal education with an internship (advocacy, judiciary, notary public, public administration, social organisations, companies). Its concept is unique in Flanders.

Specialized master programmes

In Antwerp, law graduates can further enroll in the specialized master programmes in Tax Law or Company Law.
