Rights to the Land of Israel: Claims and Compromises
Prof. dr. Gideon Shimoni 
 
From his perspective as a historian, Prof. Shimoni will discuss the nature of Jewish claims to national self-determination in the Land of Israel/Palestine as expressed over time and across the spectrum of Zionist ideologies. He will examine the various Zionist responses to Palestinian Arab counterclaims, and analyze the record of compromise options up to the present time.
 
Gideon Shimoni has recently completed a period as Head of the Institute of Contemporary Jewry of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he also holds the Shlomo Argov Chair in Israel-Diaspora Relations. His research interests and publications are in the field of twentieth century Jewish history in general and particularly the history of Zionism, Israel and contemporary
Jewish communities.
Prof. Shimoni's many publications include a volume in Hebrew on Zionism and its Opponents and a book in English entitled, Theodor Herzl: Visionary of the Jewish State. His most important work is a comprehensive study entitled The Zionist Ideology, published in 1995 by Brandeis University with the University Press of New England.
In addition to his university teaching and research Prof. Shimoni has been responsible for several international conferences, most notably the 'International Seminar on World Jewry' conducted under the auspices of the President of Israel. Over the years, he has also been a visiting professor at universities abroad and lectured publicly in the United States, Britain, Holland, Australia, Canada and South Africa.
