Education is one of the three main domains in which the Institute is active, besides research and scientific services to a more general public. The annually organized courses are aimed at both UA students, students from other institutions and non-students. The teaching language is Dutch, except for the courses on foreign literature (e.g. German-Jewish Literature is taught in German) and classes by international guest speakers.
The Institute of Jewish Studies offers paying language courses in modern Hebrew and Yiddish at two levels of linguistic competence.
Additional to these courses, the Institute organizes biweekly reading groups Yiddish and Hebrew for those with an advanced knowledge of the language. This activity is free of charge.
The general course "Introduction to Jewish culture" by Prof. dr. Karin Hofmeester has a fixed place on the course calendar of the Institute. The "Studium Generale Jewish Studies" also takes place each year and consists of a number of introductory lectures by Prof. dr. Julien Klener, followed by a personal choice of ten lectures from the Thursday evening lecture series of the IJS.
During the academic year 2012-2013 the courses "Lyrik nach 1945", "Judaism and Philosophy", "Contemporary Jewish Literature in French" and "Between Cross and Crescent: The History of Jewish Civilization from the Rise of Islam to Spinoza" are also organized.
- As a student of the Arts and Philosophy Faculty, you can follow each course separately as optional course at bachelor level (to be fit into the curriculum). In this case the course does not have to be paid.
- As a student in another discipline, or as a non-student from the University of Antwerp, you can take a credit contract to follow a course (except the language courses), in order to obtain course credits in your study program if approved by your Board of Education.
- As a non-student you can follow the language courses by registering at the Institute of Jewish Studies and paying the registration fee of 150 € (reduced fee 90 €).
If you are interested in other language courses, please check www.linguapolis.be. Linguapolis offers language courses in 14 languages, from Arab to Swedish.
