Studying Lives in Changing Times: A Life-Course Journey
Glen H. Elder is Howard W. Odum Research Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he is in charge of Life Course Studies at the Carolina Population Center. He has produced a vast body of academic publications since the seventies on life-course research, amongst which the “Children of Their Times” Trilogy, 1974-2000.
For nearly five decades, Glen H. Elder has studied the lives of individuals and their birth cohorts across the 20th century, with emphasis on Americans who were born in the 1920s, grew up in Depression times, and were later mobilized into World War II. Out of this work has emerged a life course perspective on lives in changing times and a way of using longitudinal data to investigate them. In this lecture, Elder tells the story of his career path, its chance events and turning points, and notes how this work has contributed to the now-flourishing field of life course studies.
