Please note that we are currently working to expand our offer of English taught courses. We are trying to offer more courses, and at the same time aim at a better spread of these courses throughout the academic year.

Our goal is to offer an 'international semester' in the near future, making it more practical for incoming students to find suitable courses and sufficient content-specific credits.

But, for 2013 - 2014, please keep in mind that it will be quite a puzzle to get your courses ready!

General presentation of the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences

Introduction

The Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, lead by Prof. Dr. Hilde VAN DEN BULCK, Dean, comprises 3 Departments:

  • Department of Political Science
  • Department of Communication Sciences
  • Department of Sociology

On the Bachelor level, 4 degrees are offered:

On the Master level, 9 degrees are offered:

In Belgium, a typical Bachelor programme consists of three years of education, and a Master programme of one or two years. At the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, Master programmes are one year.

However, we also offer a Master after Master or Advanced Master:

Education & International Cooperation

The Faculty of Political and Social Sciences is a research based Faculty that attaches a great deal of importance to internationalization.

In the field of education, this is most visible through numerous exchange possibilities both for incoming and outgoing students and academic staff. The Faculty stimulates exchange as a part of our own students' curriculum, both inside and outside the European Union. Vice-versa, the Faculty adheres to the belief that incoming foreign students bring added value to our campus - the concept of Internationalization @ Home brings the international experience to our students and faculty memebers who stay in Antwerp.

The majority of courses are taught in Dutch, but especially for our foreign (exchange) students several courses are offered in English. Students can choose freely out of the English taught courses within the 3 Departments. If they choose to follow Dutch taught courses, this is also possible: students receive an alternative assignment under individual supervision. Because of the fact that even in Dutch taught courses a lot of international guest lecturers are invited who obviously teach in English, foreign students will be able to follow these courses without too many difficulties.

The Faculty puts emphasis on personal guidance and assistance for incoming students. On the Faculty level, one Academic and one Administrative Coordinator function as contact persons for all matters related to internationalization. Moreover, each Department has assigned an academic staff member who functions as the first point of contact within their department. This way, our international students are integrated very smoothly and quickly within the overall functioning of the Faculty.

Recognition of academic achievements

One of the cornerstones of the international educational experience is the recognition of credits earned at the hosting institution during an exchange period abroad.

The University of Antwerp, being since long an internationally very active university, has a great deal of experience in this. The University applies the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) in all its degre programmes, and has a vast experience in correlating this European standerd of credit transfer to non-EU exchanges as well. All study programmes are measured in terms of ECTS credits. A full-time one-year study programme amounts to 60 credits (30 per semester), which comprises a student workload of about 1500 to 1800 hours. One credit stands for 25 to 30 hours of work, including contact hours, preparatry work, study and assessment. The University of Antwerp publishes annually its course catalogue online (in Dutch and English), provides international students with an information package and ECTS documents, guaranteeing total transparency for our international students.

Courses taught in Dutch

Erasmus students who wish to register for courses taught in Dutch

must demonstrate a good command of the Dutch language, both written and spoken (and do the exams in Dutch as well)
or

must ask permission from the professor, i.e. permission for an alternative assignment, and permission from the UA coordinator. This way, students don't have to attend the course itself, but will get the opportunity to write a paper instead of doing exams under supervision of teh professor/assistent

The curricula
The introduction of the bachelors and masters following the Bologna-declaration is bringing major changes in the way higher education is organized in Flanders.
This is also true for the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences. The bachelors have started in the academic year 2004-2005 and the masters will start in the year 2007-2008. The number of courses in both bachelors and masters will be lower providing more depth and width in each course.
Courses at the Faculty are generally taught in Dutch, but some English-language courses are provided. [link naar lijst]. The Dutch-language degrees are situated in three general domains: communication studies, political science, and sociology.

Bachelor of Communication Studies

Our society is rapidly evolving, with communication and media as important catalysts. The internet, mobile phones, pay-TV, satellite communication etc. have changed the world. The bachelor's programme in communication studies concentrates on the analysis of media and communication: the history of communication forms and techniques, media theory, the structure and organisation of the press and audiovisual media, etc. Different forms of communication are studied: interpersonal, business, new media, mass media etc. The degree also consists of a broad range of introductory courses on psychology, sociology, political science, philosophy, law and economics.

Master's programmes in communication studies

The department of communication studies organises three master's degrees. The Master of Communication Studies has two options: strategic communication focusing on business and government communication (marketing, public opinion etc.), and media culture focusing on (audio-)visual media culture (film and television studies, popular culture etc.). The Master of Film studies and visual culture focuses on film theory, history and analysis. Organised in collaboration with the Department of Political Science, the Master of political communication explores the links between politics and communication.

Bachelor of Political Sciences

The Bachelor of Political Sciences aims to teach students that politics is not about taking decisions in a smoke filled room, liquid lunches, or the art of lying, but all about changing society and about how it affects every aspect of life. The programme aims to provide students more insight in local, regional, national and international politics. The students will gain knowledge of the political systems of a selected group of (mainly Western-European) countries, and the history and meanings of political concepts. Therefore, the programme offers a wide variety of courses and students have the possibility to specialise in a particular area and to improve their knowledge of English and French. Apart from theoretical courses, special attention is paid to methodological courses, focusing on statistical analysis and research methods.

Master of International Politics

This newly developed Master of International Politics will offer the students the opportunity to gain insight in the European Union as well as the broader field of international relations. Students will learn to analyse European and international processes, focusing on trade, political cooperation and security issues. The master’s programme will provide the students with a look behind the scenes of political decision making and aims to teach all the skills necessary for negotiating, debating and presenting a report on international issues. Because the master is set up in close cooperation with other universities, the students will have a wide variety of courses to choose from. This will allow the students to specialise in either the European Union or the field of international relations.

Advanced Master of International Relations and Diplomacy

The Advanced Master of International Relations and Diplomacy aims at students with an interest in current political issues and international affairs. Four courses form the backbone of this advanced master: History of International Relations, Theory of International Relations, International Economics and International Economic Organisations, and International Law and Institutions of International Law. Apart from these courses, the students get the chance to attend in-depth specialisation courses and seminars. The students graduate after completing a dissertation on a topic of their own choice. Guest lectures, visits to International Institutions, the Belgian and European Parliament and a study trip to Multilateral Institutions in Geneva complement the programme of this advanced master’s programme.

Sociology

The sociology programme at the University of Antwerp spans the full range of undergraduate and graduate training (bachelor, master and Ph.D.). In the three year bachelor programme the fundamental training of a sociologist takes place. While its focus lies on sociological theory and research methodology, the bachelor programme also contains a wide range of introductions in related sciences (economics, history, philosophy, law) and some practical training (paper writing, languages). The master programme (1 year in Flanders) offers more advanced courses with a focus on sociological theory and policy applications in specific areas of society (labour, income inequality, urban issues, the environment and sustainability, demography and the life course, care and well-being).

Socio-Economic Sciences

The programme of Socio-Economic Sciences at the University of Antwerp is a unique joint venture of the faculties of Political and Social Sciences and Applied Economic Sciences. It offers students the opportunity to devise their personal study programme on the basis of a pre-structured ‘menu’ of courses. The programme aims at multidisciplinary training grounded in two basic disciplines: Sociology and Economics. In the master programme (1 year in Flanders), students complete their training with advanced courses in Economics and Sociology and choose two areas of society for elaborate study (theory, seminar, master’s thesis).

Master of Social Work

For students with a professional bachelor degree in Social Work, the University of Antwerp offers further academic training in the Master of Social Work. The programme aims at an academic extension of knowledge acquired in previous training and through actual work experience in the field. It centres around sociological theory, research methodology and evaluations of policies and interventions. Its overall objective is the development of evidence-based practice and policy making in the social service sector.
