3. Course content
This course builds on the course 'Sociology of inequality and stratification'. Typical of social exclusion is the gap with the rest of society. Poverty is seen as a special form of social exclusion, as a network of social exclusions. In a first part the following items will be dealt with: conceptual and theoretical developments, the social context of poverty and social exclusion with special attention to the European employed criterions and calculations of the amount, developments in different fields (a.o. income and spendings, job market, living, education). In an second part attention will be paid to the policy in the European, federal and Flemish area and important new policy items will be explained.
