2. Objectives (expected learning outcomes) Positioning and applicating theoretical insights and concepts with relevance for understanding the city and urbanity and the policy on urban issues.
3. Course content The course offers an overview of the main urban-sociological theories and related research achievements. Urban issues will be discussed (in Belgium and in the rest of the world) in connection with socio-cultural (modernisation, post modernisation, rationalisation, ...) and social (ecologisation, globalisation, migration, ...) developments. We will also pay attention to the operationalisation of concepts for social scientific research (how to take into account urbanity in surveys?). We will explain urban policy in Belgium and Flanders, as pursued by the cities and other governments and actors. Special attention will be paid to recent developments in governmental organisation regarding cities and urban issues.
