Objectives (expected learning outcomes) Important objectives of this course are that the students get a deeper understanding of the goals, functions and organisational forms in which education is organised. He/she can value the role of the school in education. He/she has knowledge of values and ideologies that too determine the form and the contents of education. He/she is aware of the layered relation between school and society. 3. Course content The students develop critical views on the ways education is provided and organised. The lessons consecutively focus on an overview of the educational system in Flanders, assessment of education and the educational system in Flanders, primary education, secondary education, higher education and education for children with special needs. Policy documents of the Minister of Education are analysed. The students work in groups and present the results of this work to their fellow students. Guest speakers, members of the education inspectorate and educational policy makers further explain some of these aspects. 4.
