Objectives (expected learning outcomes) Knowledge: To gain a clear understanding of the concept of sustainable development and its relation with EU-enlargement policy-related issues. Competences: To work with students with different disciplinary and cultural backgrounds and exchange views on sustainable development in Europe. Skills: To participate effectively in an electronic discussionboard, and chat sessions. To use the computer conferencing system, called blackboard, for collaborative learning purposes. 3. Course content The course `European Environmental policy: European Virtual Seminar (EVS) is attached to the `e-learning project `Virtual seminar on enlargement and sustainable development in an expanding Europe. This education project is co-ordinated by the COPERNICUS secretariat and supported by the Open University of the Netherlands. The seminar focuses on sustainable development in the context of the European enlargement process. The guiding principle behind the virtual seminar is that of learning (at distance) in collaborative learning communities. Students will participate in international and multidisciplinary groups through a case study approach. The cases include topics about integrated water management, agricultural policy and waste policy. The participating universities are Karkonoshe College(Polen), Universiteit Antwerpen (IvM) (Belgium),Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Universiteit Amsterdam, University of Extramadura (Spain), and the Open Universiteit (the Netherlands). 4. Compulsory reading – study material The participating institutions co-operatively develop the learning materials and publish web based study materials on the internet. 7.
