- De onderliggende oorzaken begrijpen die de variatie aan politieke processen en beleid over verschillende landen en politieke omgevingen verklaren.
Dit opleidingsonderdeel zoekt om de studenten te helpen begrijpen hoe en waarom politieke processen en beleidsvormen variëren over verschillende politieke omgevingen. De cursus is niet descriptief ingevuld; de actuele politiek zal niet worden besproken. Evenmin zal de vergelijkende methode behandeld worden. Studenten worden verwacht om deze basiskennis al eigen te hebben gemaakt in eerdere opleidingsonderdelen. Het voornaamste doel van de cursus is om studenten vertrouwd te maken met en te laten discussiëren over theoretische modellen en conceptuele instrumenten uit de discipline van de vergelijkende politiek en te tonen hoe deze kunnen worden gebruikt om politieke fenomenen te begrijpen. De cursus zal voornamelijk (hoewel niet exclusief) handelen over institutionalistische theorieën, met name theorieën die verklarende waarde aan institutionele factoren toekennen.
De cursus zal zich toespitsen op de volgende onderwerpen: een conceptualisering van politieke partijen en de historische evolutie van partijsystemen, de gevolgen van electorale regels, modellen van democratie en hun performantie, de 'veto players'-theorie, institutionele dynamieken in de Europese Unie, delegatietheorieën, en de effecten van instituties op buitenlands beleid.
