3. Inhoud
This series of debates has the intention to open a window to some actual development topics at the interface between the North and the South. We want to offer a platform for reflection on current topics in the field of development to a broad public. Each topic is introduced on the basis of a presentation by a reknowned speaker from the South or the North. A discussant sets the stage for further debate. This year’s edition marks the 10th anniversary of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In 2001 the United Nations member states adopted a set of development goals, to be reached by 2015. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, … one can not deny the ambitious character of the campaign. Although the first reaction was one of great enthousiasm, the public opinion soon responded with skepticism. The goals were believed to be far too unrealistic, and were used for purposes for which they were not designed. But where do we really stand after ten years? Jan Vandemoortele, our first keynote speaker and the main architect of the MDGs, will take us back to 2000 and will attempt to give us a better insight in the campaign. In the subsequent debates we take a closer look at the individual MDGs. Moreover, for this year’s edition, we include a lecture of Paul Collier, organized by the University Centre Saint Ignasius Antwerp (UCSIA). Paul Collier is the author of the book ‘The Bottom Billion’ and is one of today’s most influential development economists.
