The University of Antwerp and KBC establish a research chair in financial risk management

Risk management is currently a hot topic in the financial sector; a fact borne out repeatedly over recent months and years by the financial crisis. New insight into the subject will lead to improved risk management in the future. Precisely for this reason, the UA and KBC join forces and create the KBC chair in Risk Management, which will focus on financial risk management. The chair will fund a doctoral study to thoroughly examine the management of financial risks. "These risks exist in two areas", explains prof. dr. Jan Annaert. "You have market risk and credit risk; the first covers the chance of stock price fluctuations and focuses on the short-term of maximum ten days, whilst credit risk includes, for example, the possibility that borrowers are unable to pay their loans, and that involves a longer term up to a year." Both risks, according to Jan Annaert, are related. "But until now, not much research has been carried out into the subject. While it's possible for academics to obtain information on market risk, it is much more difficult to access data on credit risks. But a financial institution  like KBC has that data, which is why this cooperation is so interesting. The UA can supply the academic know-how, and KBC will provide the data and share the relevant practical problematics involved".
Prof. dr. Jan Annaert and prof. dr. Marc De Ceuster will be the UA-members of the scientific committee of this four-year venture. Click to open the press release .

Air Transport Colloquium 2010

The worldwide financial crisis has increasingly become a global economic crisis, with big impact on air transport and all its actors. Because of the derived character, the air transport sector has been clearly affected by the decrease of international economic activity, industrial production and trade. Within the transport sector, air transport turned out to be more sensitive than other modes. Some have recovered better than others, some are still struggling for survival.

It is therefore important that any new developments in air transport should be acknowledged as soon as possible. This colloquium is intended as a platform to enhance this process. In a series of presentations, a number of key elements for success and failure are discussed in detail, whereby attention is devoted to all the major players in the air transport industry. Some possible scenarios for the mid-term development of the air transport sector in relation to possible developments of the general economic situation will be discussed.

Selected academics and market players have been invited to present lectures on the following crucially important topics:

-       Critical issues in the post-crisis air transport

-      Expected climate change effects on the air transport sector

-      Wealth destruction and demand for air travel

-      Pricing issues reconsidered: from ATC to airlines

-      Strategies of a non-alliance airline

-      Future air strategy of a smaller, niche network alliance partner

The colloquium concludes with a panel discussion with all important market players and conference participants. During the lectures and panel discussions, ample opportunity shall be provided for interaction between the speakers and the audience. Click for more information.
