The Department of Transport and Regional Economics has, in recent decades, experienced spectacular growth, driven by developments in both business and politics. Companies now fully recognise the importance of logistics and transport, and notions such as just-in-time delivery have become familiar, even among the general public. And, in the face of growing road congestion, policymakers have placed the mobility issue firmly at the top of the political agenda.
The efficient organization of traffic and transport, including storage and transhipment, has become an issue of interest to business as well as policymakers. It needs to be taken into account in the shaping of a sustainable mobility policy. Meaningful and authoritative research into transport and spatial planning requires a global picture of the issues at hand. Acquiring such insight has always been the purpose of the Department of Transport and Regional Economics. For this reason, it offers a study programme to students of both business economics and general economics. Furthermore, the research projects pursued by the members of the Department cover business topics, public policy issues and macroeconomic aspects.
The Department has achieved many successes over the years: authoritative publications have materialized and thousands of students have been trained. This website is not devoted to the Department's long history or its impressive record. It does however provide a brief overview of what has been achieved over the years and what is on offer today. Increasingly, the government, companies and other interested parties are calling on the research capabilities of the Department. The enthusiasm and expertise with which the departmental staff, including its junior members, perform these assignments guarantee that its reputation will continue to be enhanced in the future.
