PhD defense Monica Grosso
on ‘Improving the competitiveness of intermodal transport: applications on European corridors’.
on 16 December 2011 at 2pm, at University of Genova
Joint PhD Doctor in de Toegepaste Economische Wetenschappen, University of Antwerp & Dottorato in Logistica, Trasporti e Territorio, University of Genoa
Monica’s PhD deals with intermodal competitiveness, and focuses on the cost/price component. Therefore, her research investigates the pure transport cost, out of pocket cost that the transport operator is bearing. An out-of the pocket tool is developed for the calculation of the transport costs. The model also takes the external cost elements into account that will be considered in case of their internalization.

On the occasion of her work done in the framework of Flanders Logistics, dr. Monica Grosso will also present her PhD results and the tool she developed during a seminar on 16 March 2012 at 3pm at the University of Antwerp – TPR (room C-101, Prinsstraat 13). Subsequent to the presentation, Mr. Frans Smits (Nike), Kris Verhulst (Procter & Gamble) and Isabelle Ryckbost (EFIP), who will give their views on issues like the possibilities of intermodality, mode competition, and port hinterlands, will initiate a discussion, underlining the importance towards the transport and logistics sector but also to shippers of having a tool that allows comparing the costs of different transport alternatives. Including external costs is important, as internalization seems to get nearer. A panel discussion will be held, involving also the audience.
