Method in research design (June 10, 11 and 12)

Performing high quality research in line with standards for scientific conduct requires a thorough understanding of the principles of research methodology. This 3-day course offers you an overview of the entire research cycle, starting with guidelines for the formulation of proper research questions and hypotheses; continuing with the choice of measurement instruments, study design, and sampling design; discussing important issues that need consideration during the phase of data collection; and finally, reporting the research in a scientific manner.

Method in data collection (June 17, 18 and 19)

A major aspect of any empirical research regards the collection of data. This 3-day course offers an overview of topics regarding measurement, providing general guidelines for the operationalization of abstract concepts through the construction of indicators and the design of data collection instruments (e.g., questionnaires). At the end of this course, you know about basic aspects of measurement, understand the design and limitations of commonly used data collections methods (secondary data; primary data including observation, interviewing, and content analysis), and deal with problems that might occur during data collection and analysis. Each course will be taught in three days of learning-by-doing.

The general set-up of this course consists of lecturing with assignments where students apply methodological concepts to their own ongoing research. Students can apply the general principles of research methodology to their own ongoing research.
