In the research Master of neurosciences students are obliged to participate in research for 54 ects. They have to register for (1) a research internship, (2) the project proposal and (3) the Master’s research project and thesis. The research internship lasts 6 weeks in a laboratory of the students own choice. The project proposal and the Master’s research project and thesis are completed in one of the spearhead laboratories. In completing the research projects, you will gain practical experience in scientific research and learn to analyse data, write reports and give oral presentations. Students are encouraged to go abroad and complete their research work in part or entirely in a partner university.

The research internship lasts 6 weeks in a laboratory of the students own choice, one or two intensive programme’s abroad offers an alternative. Coördinator: Wim Van Hul ECTS: 9
Goal and content The student will during 6 weeks participate in an active manner in a research lab of biomedical sciences. The student can indicate his preference for a certain research team. During these weeks, the student will initially observe certain activities en write them down in a lab journal. Furthermore, the student needs to perform a limited study of literature in order to understand the background of the research. In a second stage, the student will participate more active in the performance of the experiments, obviously depending on the type of experimental work. All experiments done and obtained results will be written in the lab journal and be discussed with the promoter. Prerequisite knowledge: Relevant BA. Teaching method: observations and research activities written in a lab journal, discussions. Place/time/frequency: a six-week period during April and May in the second semester. Assessment: practical training evaluation. Literature: publications .

The project proposal concerns the master’s research project Coördinator: Annemie Van Der Linden Co-coordinator: Eva Geuens ECTS: 12
Goal and content The most important aim is that after the project you got a clear picture of how you will tackle your Master’s research project and thesis and how to bring it to a successful end. You know the current knowledge on your Master Thesis topic. You can read in a critical way the literature and you can place your research in the broader context of the thesis topic. You know what the specific contribution of your Master Thesis will be. You know exactly what you are going to investigate, you can formulate a scientific hypothesis on this, you know exactly how you will investigate your hypothesis, what results can be expected and how you'll analyze and interpret these data. You can present your project in a PowerPoint presentation and explain it to a group of fellow students and assessors. You can write a scientific report of 6 pages describing your project.
Prerequisite knowledge: Relevant BA. Teaching method: general lectures by instructors; feed-back sessions; demonstrations. Place/time/frequency: six-week period in November and December of the 3rd semester. Assessment: oral examination after written preparation. Literature: Literature related to the subject of the thesis is listed by the promoter and is collected by the student.
