Experienced researcher

Project title : Innovative concepts, models, and techniques for an optimal production strategy and planning of a semi-continuous petrochemical production plant.

We are looking for an experienced (preferably postdoc) researcher in production management for a fifteen-month project starting in November 2013 in collaboration with Q8. The supervisors of this project are Prof. Trijntje Cornelissens (Production Management) and Prof. Kenneth Sörensen (Operations Research).

Project

The Kuwait Petroleum Company (Q8) plans to completely restructure its Antwerp plant over the next few years and has contracted the department of Engineering Management to support this project with innovative scientific models. The aim of this research project is to develop a state-of-the-art decision support methodology that should allow the company to organize the production and logistics operations at the Antwerp plant in the most efficient way. The selected candidate will work on the development of quantitative methods, as well as qualitative guidelines for the effective management of a large production plant in the petroleum industry. A more complete description of the project can be requested from the supervisors.

Profile

The ideal candidate has a PhD in Operations Research/Management Science or similar quantitative skills, including a good command of quantitative software, as well as a good understanding of the management context in which quantitative decision support methods are used.

He/she is an excellent researcher, preferably demonstrated by a considerable publication track record.

He/she is fluent in English and can build bridges between research and industry.

Job description

·         You prepare a PhD thesis in the field of Strategy and Organization;

·         The PhD topic will be determined depending on your interests in consultation with your supervisors, Prof. dr. Christophe Boone and Prof. dr. Arjen van Witteloostuijn,  within the scope of the broad research program of the Antwerp Centre of Evolutionary Demography (ACED). The key questions raised in this program are (1) where does demographic diversity come from, and (2) what does it imply for the behavior and performance of social entities, such as teams, organizations, industries, networks and communities. ·         A joint PhD scholarship at the University of Antwerp  & at the University of Tilburg for a period of two years, with the possibility of renewal for another two year period after positive evaluation;
