PROCEDURE
There are two procedures for finding student housing
1) You make your own arrangements (< Kotweb)
This is the most frequently used and most advisable procedure for students who will be staying in Antwerp for an entire academic year. They have less difficulty finding a student room, as most rooms are rented for a period of 10 months. You will be given access to the student housing database "KOTWEB" that offers a wide selection of recognised student accommodation in and around Antwerp. Besides a list of available rooms, studios and apartments, Kotweb also provides you with detailed information on the housing facilities, the lease, garbage collection etc. You can consult the database at
http://www.studentkotweb.be
as of June 15(the database will be uploaded then).
We strongly advise you to make your room reservation as early as possible, as this will enhance your options of finding suitable accommodation! The rent of a furnished room is about € 350/month for a full academic year. Studios are more expensive and cost about € 450/month or more. A surplus might be charged for short rental periods. Note that the costs for water, electricity and heating are usually not included in the rental price and that cooking utensils, bed linen and towels are usually not provided by the landlord!
If you are reluctant of booking a room in advance, you can come to Antwerp a week or two before the semester starts and have a look around. In this case, you are advised to book a room in a youth hostel or a low budget hotel for the first nights of your stay. A list of addresses can be found at the bottom of this webpage. Ho(s)tel bookings should be made in time!
The international housing office disposes of a limited number of rooms! Therefore, students who will be staying in Antwerp for an entire academic year cannot apply for housing through the university! They have less difficulty finding a student room as most rooms are rented for a period of 10 months. If you have doubts about the chosen room you can ask for advice (martine.depauw@ua.ac.be).
ATTENTION -> NEVER pay rent or deposit through Western Union!
2) You apply for a room through the university housing office
The international housing office disposes of a limited number of rooms in the student dormitories and university residences (private owners). The average price for a room (a) in one of the student dorms is € 260, (b) in the university residences the rent varies between 250 EUR and 380 EUR, all costs included. As there is only a limited number available, the following rental terms are to be respected:September – February (5 months : 1st semester) and February – July (5 months: 2nd semester).
1.The request for accommodation should be filled in the Mobility Online database – only when your file is complete and fully accepted, the international housing office will check for available housing
2.The address of your room will be communicated to you by e-mail (so, please check your e-mail regularly!). You have to mail the contact person/landlord within five working days, if not the reservation will be cancelled. All practical arrangements go through this contact person/landlord. Please cc your mail to martine.depauw@ua.ac.be.
3.A deposit (usually 2 months rent) + the rent for the 1st month are to be transferred as soon as possible into the contact person’s/landlords bank account (follow the given instructions!). Only then the reservation is officially made. The deposit will be returned to you at the end of your stay when no damage has been ascertained to the room or its furniture. NEVER pay rent or deposit through Western Union!
4.The Kotweb contact persons/landlords use a standardised contract (Kotweb lease) for student accommodation. Upon arrival, the landlord will ask you to sign this contract in return for the keys.
5.The rent is to be paid on the first day of each rental month.
6.Most of the student rooms are single rooms with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. Only studios have ensuite facilities (=their own kitchen and bathroom).
7.Make sure to check whether you have to provide your own towels, bed linen (sheets, pillow, pillow case and blankets) and kitchen utensils. A sleeping bag may be a good temporary solution!
