The University of Antwerp is the third largest university in Flanders, with a student population of 18,800. Our university has several campuses situated in the historic city centre and the leafy suburbs of Antwerp. Click here for more information on the University of Antwerp.

Our 33 bachelor programmes (180 ECTS credits) are taught in Dutch. You can find an overview of these programmes and the admission procedure on our website.

Obtaining a PhD at the University of Antwerp is always the result of research, in combination with a doctoral study programme, under the supervision of a staff member of the university. In order to find a supervisor, consult the research pages of the University of Antwerp which show the current topics. If you find one or more professors who are involved in the type of research you wish to pursue, please inquire with them directly. Only after an agreement has been reached between the professor and yourself, you can start the procedure to obtain permission to register as a PhD student. The deadlines mentioned below do not apply to all our study programmes. Some programmes have different deadlines. Always check the programme’s website for latest updates on the application procedure!

You need a student visa: your application file for the academic year 2013–2014 should reach the Student Administration Office before 31 March 2013.

You do not need a student visa: your application file for the academic year 2013–2014 should reach the Student Administration Office before 31 May 2013 (Applied Economic Sciences) or 30 June 2013 (other programmes).

Please understand it will take several weeks to process your application. It is in your own interest to send in your application file as soon as possible!

There is no deadline for sending in an application for a PhD programme.

The academic year 2013-2014 starts on 23 September 2013.

You need a letter of acceptance from the University of Antwerp to start the visa procedure. Eligeble candidates will receive a letter of acceptance AFTER evaluation of their application file. Plese check with the Belgian embassy or consulate in your home country for information on other requirements and application procedure for a student visa ( www.diplomatie.belgium.be ).

It is your responsibility to obtain the visa before the start of the academic year.  The university can not be held responsible for any delay on that matter!

The University of Antwerp does not offer scholarships.  Our website does however provide a number of useful links for students in search of a scholarship ( www.ua.ac.be/scholarships ). Also www.scholarshipportal.eu is a very useful tool.

It is strongly recommended to contact the Belgian Embassy or Consulate (or other representative) in your home country to learn about scholarship opportunities. The addresses can be found at the official website from t he Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( www.diplomatie.belgium.be ).

The Belgian Development Agency ( www.btcctb.org ) offers grants to master and PhD students from their partner countries: Algeria, Benin, Bolivia, Burundi, DR Congo, Ecuador, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Palestine, Peru, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Vietnam. If you are a national from one of these countries, please contact the Belgian Embassy or Consulate for more information.

The Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR) provides study scholarships to allow students from developing countries to follow an ICP (International Course) or ITP (International Training Programme).  Check the VLIR-website for more information and application procedure.

The Institute for Language and Communication from the University of Antwerp, LINGUAPOLIS, offers a wide range of Dutch language courses (daytime as well as evening) lasting between 2 weeks and a full academic year. 

The preparatory one-year Dutch programme is the only Dutch language programme which entitles international students to a student visa.  More information and application form available on our website.

If you are interested in an exchange programme, please contact the International Relations Office at your home university to find out whether or not they have an exchange agreement with the University of Antwerp.  Only international students who have been selected by their home university can participate in an exchange programme with the University of Antwerp!

If you want to register for a study programme organised in Dutch, you must be able to show a certain proficiency in Dutch. The language proficiency can be shown in two ways:

either you completed and passed – in Dutch – at least one year (or the equivalent in credits) at secondary school, university college or university;

or you passed (within the last 2 years) one of the following language tests:

-      the Interuniversity language test Dutch as a foreign language as organised and recognized by the following universities: University of Antwerp, HU Brussel, Universiteit Gent and KU Leuven. More information and registration at: www.linguapolis.be/itna

-      the internationally recognised exam ‘Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal’ – ‘Profiel Acadmische Taalvaardigheid (PAT)’ or ‘Profiel Taalvaardigheid Hoger Onderwijs (PTHO)’ ( www.cnavt.org )

-      the NT2-exam ‘Staatsexamen Nederlands als tweede taal – programme II’ ( www.nederlandsalstweedetaal.nl/staatsexamen.pdf ).

Proof of proficiency in Dutch has to be presented upon registration. Without this, registration for a study programme taught in Dutch is not possible!
