Patti M. Valkenburg is a Professor in the Amsterdam School of Communications Research ASCoR and director of CCAM (Center for research on Children, Adolescents and the Media). Her research interests include children's and adolescents' likes and dislikes of entertainment, their development as consumers, and the cognitive, emotional, and social effects of media contents and technologies on young people. In 2003, she received a Vici award for top researchers from the Dutch National Science Foundation (NWO). Valkenburg serves on many boards and committees to improve children's media literacy and to protect them from age-inappropriate media contents. She is responsible for the development of the Dutch media rating system Kijkwijzer, and a member of the European research consortium EU Kids Online. She is a member of the editorial boards of several international journals. Finally, she is the founder and chair of the first international academic section on children, adolescents, and the media (CAM), which is hosted by the ICA.
