The Research Foundation Flanders (Fonds Wettenschappelijk Onderzoek or FWO) puts out yearly calls for research project proposals that pre-doctoral candidates can apply for in their own name. These are called pre-doc mandates. Flemish professors can also submit proposals for research projects to hire PhD students. Typically, these funding sources pay a salary and include a budget for research-related costs for four years.
