Research Interests and Expertise:
Interdisciplinary study of contract, tort and law relating to dispute resolution (improving the legal system with the help of knowledge from economics, psychology, organisation theory, negotiation theory); Negotiation theory and law (study of the negotiation environment that is created by the legal system – the shadow of the law); Access to justice (How to assess access to justice? How to improve it? Access to justice through negotiation in the shadow of the law); Victimology.
 
Current projects:
·        Measuring Access to Justice: development of a methodology for measuring the price (expenses, effort, other costs) and the quality of frequently used “paths to justice” for the average user, see working paper at http://ssrn.com/abstract=949209. Sponsored by Hague Institute for the Internationalisation of Law.
·        Delta G: developing conceptual framework for an interactive website for the Dutch Legal Aid Councils with conflict diagnosis, advise about suitable interventions, referral to experts, tools to interact and negotiate with the other party, intake and filing of claims at neutral third party intervention point (arbitration, mediation, courts).
·        Procedural Justice in Civil Justice Court Hearings (settlement and case-management conferences): observation and survey of parties, lawyers, and judges who participate in 150 court hearings (expectations, experiences of procedural and interactional justice, interventions to promote settlement, types of activities during hearing, other interventions). Sponsored by Dutch Judicial Council; cooperation with psychologists Tom R. Tyler and David de Cremer. 
·        Transaction Costs in the Settlement of Personal Injury Claims: assessment of the various methods to diminish the transaction costs; negotiated rule making process that has led to a code of conduct for the settlement of personal injury claims in cooperation with the major stakeholders. Sponsored by Dutch Ministry of Justice and two victim support/victimology research foundations. 
·        Several Papers on Dispute Resolution System Design on topics such as: legal needs, the role of objective criteria in conflict resolution,  Microjustice as a market-oriented approach to tackle access to justice problems.
