Information and communication technology (ICT) is becoming more and more crucial in modern logistics and transport. Accurate and real-time information is vital to support and optimize logistics processes. Sophisticated, up-to-date information systems can supply this information. They provide decision makers with timely and accurate information about their business processes. Since the mid-90's, information systems have evolved very fast. The architecture of most systems is now built around a complex mix of databases, ERP systems (such as SAP, Oracle and Peoplesoft), facilities for B2B and B2C communication, data warehouses and portals. The goal of this course is twofold. A first part provides an overview of the concepts behind state-of-the-art information systems in transport and logistics and their supporting technologies (ICT). A second part shows how these concepts are applied in real-life systems in different parts of the supply chain.
