- INLANAV - Innovative Inland Navigation. 01/05/2010 - 30/11/2011
| Abstract | Three private partners (University of Antwerp, Schipco BV and Research Small Barges BV) are participating in the INLANAV-platform with a view of developing new vessel designs and facilitating market take-up. The concepts range from push barges powered by electric engines to the realization of an automatically guided barge with a greater hold; using new technologies and materials like for example composites.
The University of Antwerp is examining a two stage tug and barge concept. In the first stage, the tug and barge concept sails on large waterways with several barges pushed by a single tug from seaports to the small inland waterways.
In the second stage, at the entrance of a small inland waterway, the convoy is uncoupled and the small barges continue autonomously. The main focus of the concept is to combine economies of scale on large rivers (i.e. tugs and barges together) while the individual barges are small and economically feasible to sail on small waterways. This way the convoy can compete with its main competitor: road transport. | | Duration | 01/05/2010 - 30/11/2011 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s)

- Production of a report on Maritime Transport Market with emphasis on ports highlighting market characteristics and strategies. 08/02/2010 - 30/08/2010
| Abstract | The aim of this contribution is to identify and analyze a number of critical issues in the port and maritime business for the future decades. It is clear that the sector is facing a number of big challenges, emanating from worldwide economic changes, social evolutions and environmental awareness. These changes stem from inside as well as from outside the sector. It is important to get grip on what these changing characteristics are, how structural they are, how important their impact is, and what factors are causing or triggering them. Research in the frame of this paper has led to six future key issues: - The changing relationship between maritime and port activity and international trade - The role of actor strategies and interests in port competitiveness - The increasing stress on port hinterland connections - The growing intertwinedness and integration of maritime and port-related companies - Concessions as remaining port authority tools - Increasing opportunities and potential of inter-port co-operation | | Duration | 08/02/2010 - 30/08/2010 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s) | |
- High efficient and reliable arrangements for crossmodal transport (HERMES). 01/01/2010 - 31/12/2011
| Abstract | HERMES project will provide development and analysis of new mobility schemes and associated organisational patterns at the interface and interconnection between long distance transport networks and local/regional transport networks. Although these are conceptually simple operations, requiring only some real-time telecommunication, there are organizational and contractual difficulties in its realisation. The first part should concentrate on identification of the key requirements of the travellers, the corresponding services and necessary underlying company agreements to provide them, followed by a business plan for the operation. The second part of the project would have demonstrations in the selected corridors for a period of at least 6 months of field experience. | | Duration | 01/01/2010 - 31/12/2011 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s) | |

| Abstract | The main idea behind this project is to advance innovation integration in transport and logistics chains by focusing on improved market understanding, knowledge management and network organisation. Taking into account the main observations from the state of the art, it is clear that innovation in surface transportation and in logistics chains, as a change producing mechanism, needs to be much further assessed and benchmarked. | | Duration | 01/01/2010 - 31/12/2011 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s) | |
- Accessibility to places and transport: social, economic and environmental interactions (INTERACT). 15/12/2009 - 31/01/2012
| Abstract | In INTERACT we propose to integrate the results from accessibility-related research projects in order to develop a new vision on
the accessibility issue in a context of sustainable development. The teams indeed performed analyses and developed indicators
related to social, economic and environmental issues; our aim is here to find out how these studies are related to accessibility and what the INTERACTions imply in terms of sustainability. This is why the project takes its starting point in a heuristic approach that focuses on different groups of experts in connection with the assessments of quality of life and sustainability resulting from
different accessibility and mobility preconditions. | | Duration | 15/12/2009 - 31/01/2012 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s)

- Study on air passengers' rights compliance. 05/03/2009 - 05/04/2009
| Abstract | This proposal addresses the call for tenders SANCO/2009/B5/002 "Study on air passengers'' rights
compliance", which focuses on the specific aspect of misleading advertising on the websites of airlines
and online travel agents.
The study will analyse the contents of web pages of online travel agents and tour operators and airlines
and check its compliance with the provisions of the existing legislation according to the check-list
(provided in annex 7 to the terms of reference) that was given by the Commission to the travel industry
and a guideline for compliance. A data base will be developed and provided enabling the analysis country
by country as well as by groups of companies (e.g. as suggested: airlines and; on-line travel agents and
tour operators). The booking process will be the main subject of examination. The study will very likely find
that some airlines or travel agency chains rank high in more than one country, and in those cases an
aggregated report for the company as a whole will be made.
The study should conclude with a summary of the findings; an analysis of the situation by group; a list of
companies ordered by degree of compliance, from fully compliant to below average compliant, the scale of
which is to be defined in discussion with the Commission on the most convenient classification for current
and future benchmarking. | | Duration | 05/03/2009 - 05/04/2009 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s)
- Mission Council Traffic Strategy containers. 01/03/2009 - 30/06/2009
| Abstract | It is the consortium''s intention to assist the port of Le Havre on its mission "Mission de conseil en strategie de traffic conteneurs". Within this project , the consortium will determine the factors affecting shipping companies in making their port choice for Le Havre. Port choice items will be developed from a critical literature review and a series of interviews targeting national and foreign container shipping lines to satisfy contents validity of our survey instruments.
The project is structured in two tasks and a final action plan consisting of a road map. Within task one, the consortium will analyze and give an overview on developments of key ports and key ocean carriers. The consortium will analyze the hinterland connections of Le Havre and its competing ports Marseilles, Barcelona, La Spezia, Trieste, Duinkerken, Nantes, Valencia, Genoa, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Bremen and Hamburg. The determination of competing ports occurred in consultation with the client. At last, the consortium will, based on determined criteria, give good practice examples to improve the competitive position of ports.
Within task two, the consortium will identify the actual decision makers (shipping lines, freight forwarders, shippers,¿) and determine for each party the factors influencing the choice of ports. At first the consortium will analyze the most important criteria in port choice decisions for shipping lines. Further, the variables which have a strong impact, on the port''s image towards shipping companies will be determined. The second step will test for the main variables that shippers or forwarders find crucial in general in selecting a transport mode combination. | | Duration | 01/03/2009 - 30/06/2009 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s)

| Abstract | A quantitative and qualitative assesment is made about the future demand for water related industry grounds and terminal activities along the navigable waterways in Flanders. Based on this research recommendations can be formulated with respect to the policy of supply by the Flemish government in relation to water related grounds. The research of the University of Antwerp is concentrated on traffic analysis and prognoses of freight transport via inland waterway transport. The team of Arcadis Gedas starts from an analysis of the use of water related grounds. As such, the combined research results in an interaction between transport and regional economics. | | Duration | 01/02/2007 - 01/02/2008 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s) | |

- Policy Study Centre Space and Living Issues (2007-2011). 01/01/2007 - 31/12/2011
| Abstract | Starting from a policy orientated view based on applied academic research, the Policy Research Centre on Regional Planning and Housing attempts to get a clear insight in the driving forces which determine the spatial structure in Flanders. The Policy research centre will look for transformations and developments in space and housing which take place in Flanders. Furthermore it will to investigate why and how these transformations take place.
Within the Policy Research centre the work package ''transformations in space due to economy'' is analyzing the current forms and changing characteristics of the use of economic space. Determining changes in the location choice of economic activities can lead to a shift in spatial patterns and requirements. In order to develop a sustainable spatial planning it is important to bear in mind the different trends in economic location and try to quantify them. | | Duration | 01/01/2007 - 31/12/2011 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s)

- Study on the relation between location policy and durable mobility. 01/05/2006 - 31/12/2006
| Abstract | The general objective of this project is to examine which impact an on mobility coordinated location policy can have on the sustainable development of mobility and conversely, considering the complex interaction between land use and transport. The recognition that land use and transport are linked, leads to the need to coordinate location- and mobility policy. From the point of view of transport policy, spatial scheduling must prevent that the mobility question increases unnecessarily by unbalanced planning of distances between home - and work areas.
The study starts with exploring the complexity of the problem, which results in a range of research questions. A part of the answers can already be found in the scientific literature. Further, empirical research is conducted by means of the data of the Census of 1991 and the Socio-Economic Inquiry of 2001 for commuter traffic in Flanders. | | Duration | 01/05/2006 - 31/12/2006 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s)

- SP2SP Spatial planning to strategic projects ¿ economic strategic projects. 01/04/2005 - 31/12/2009
| Abstract | This project aims to develop an integrated and innovative approach (innovative spatial concept development, innovative policy instruments, and process architecture and quality management) for strategic projects. Strategic projects are defined as spatial projects, coordinated by public actors in close co-operation with the private sector, and other semi¿public actors. Strategic projects are considered necessary to achieve normative policy objectives and goals (such as sustainable development) embedded in strategic planning processes on different policy levels. Strategic projects have an impact on a larger area, and aim to transform the spatial, the economic, the socio-cultural development of this larger area through a punctual intervention. Strategic projects aim to integrate different goals and objectives of different policy sectors, ambitions and goals from the private sector, inhabitants and users of the area. The approach we aim to develop is open and generic in its character, since it will be applicable on a variety of spatial projects in different kinds of strategic planning processes and in different contexts (urban, neorural context, economic development). The project tries to bridge the gap between theoretical models and methods on governance, spatial planning, regional economic development, sustainable strategies, urbanism and a generic applicable approach for strategic projects. | | Duration | 01/04/2005 - 31/12/2009 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s) | |

- Optimal landuse in and around European port regions: The search for a sustainable development for both region and port. 01/10/2003 - 31/12/2004
| Abstract | This research project looks into the simultaneously evolving spatial systems region and port in large European port areas. Possibly a spatial conflict will present itself because of the enormous need for space resulting from both systems. On the other hand, to co-existence of city and neighbouring port results in quite a few advantages. As to fully picture the complete relationship, we will approach the developments from different dimensions. Resulting from empirical resarch and international cooperation-alliances, it is our goal to put forward some policy guidelines that will handle thus universal trouble-spot. | | Duration | 01/10/2003 - 31/12/2004 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s) | |

- Monography on commuting in Belgium. 01/10/2003 - 31/12/2006
| Abstract | In the year 2001, another socio-economic survey was carried out by the Belgian government. This has been the case every 10 years since 1846. Some of the questions are particularly related to home-work and home-school commuting, such as the distance travelled, the time of departure, the transportation mode, the activities on the way to work, etc. Next to these variables, individual and household characteristics are added. These are, for example, gender, age, educational level, composition of the household income and number of people living in the household. Also a few spatial variables, such as the Standard Metropolitan Labour Area, are added to the dataset. The analysis of these variables will result in a monograph of home-work and home-school commuting. Subjects such as the relation between the place of living and the location of work or school, the possible spatial mismatch between them, the commuting behaviour during the peak hours, the influence of socio-economic characteristics and spatial characteristics on commuting behaviour will be addressed. Also the evolution between 1991 and 2001 (and if necessary even further back in time) will be part of the monograph. At the end, a part will be dedicated to the comparison of the availability and quality of data from the socio-economic survey and these of other sources such as the mobility surveys. | | Duration | 01/10/2003 - 31/12/2006 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s) | |

- Economic activities in European cities: do suburbs need cities? 01/10/2003 - 31/12/2003
| Abstract | The main goal of the project is to describe and explain the urban spatial structure of Antwerp and its evolution in terms of employment and firms'' locations. Using local and global autocorrelation indices as well as 3D-mapping and new visualisation techniques within a GIS-framework, we will scientifically test the existence and localisation of employment subcentres within the urban agglomeration. The hypotheses are: - There are centrifugal forces ledaing firms and employment to leave the city centres for the periphery; this process is not homogeneous and leads to new suburban employment centres. - The intensity of these centrifugal forces varies with type and activity and changes over time. Both will be tested using census data by statistical wards and activity types. As a result we should get a better insight in the way economic activities concentrate in urban space and a better understanding of the relationship between the centre and the periphery. | | Duration | 01/10/2003 - 31/12/2003 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s) | |
- Evaluation of the qualitative differences between modes of transport of goods. 01/10/2003 - 30/06/2005
| Abstract | The purpose of this research project is to look into the qualitative differences for the various modes of transport. Specifically, among the features treated, there''s safety, reliability, flexibility, punctuality, information and risk for damage. During the project, our intention is to measure, and possibly make use of the resulting (cost) advantages. The type of goods and organisation of shipper and addressee (organisation of stock and distribution) are decisive for the final mode choice. The importance of these factors due to the international character of most transports and the growing number of intermediaries. Through a questionnaire, the necessary information will be gathered to scientifically study this trouble spot, | | Duration | 01/10/2003 - 30/06/2005 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s) | |
- Spatial analysis and Modelling Based on Activities (SAMBA) 01/10/2003 - 31/05/2005
| Abstract | The main goal of this research project is to obtain an estimation of the demand for displacements, all purposes included, in Belgiuml, based on activity chains. These will be drawn from data collected during the first Belgian national survey on household mobility (MOBEL) coordinated by GRT and financed by OSTC in the framework of SPSD I. It will also be drawn from data at the regional and local level, from data collected in Flanders and more especially at Antwerp, Ghent and Hasselt. To reach this objective, we will have to add a spatial dimension to the activity chains analysis, up to now, only studied for their time components. The project is built in 3 stages: - First there will be a specialization of data collected during the used surveys. - A second stage will study the modelling of activity chains that can be designed from these data. The crucial step is the extension from a temporal to a spatio-temporal approach. | | Duration | 01/10/2003 - 31/05/2005 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s) | |
- Company logistics costs and transport policy: the role of inventories and delivery times in case of multimodal choice 01/10/2003 - 31/12/2004
| Abstract | Inventory costs and delivery times are important determinants of the toal logistic performance of a company. Moreover, both inventory costs and delivery times are closely related to modal choice decision making. A current problem to forecasting the fluctuations in demand and delivery time. With respect to both factors, several theoretical assumptions can be made. Related to above-statedproblem are a number of subproblems which are also important: e.g. such issues as optimal delivery quantitiy and order date, both are strongly related to the characteristics of the delivery time; cost/time of inventory keeping; importance of safety stocks and safety delivery times; risks and shortage costs and costs of late deliveries; and influence of new developments in logisitic management (time-based competition, just-in-time delivery and zero inventories, role of new information technologies, web applications). Besides theoretically analyzing and modelling the importance of inventories and deliverytimes with respect to transport decisions, the present project aims to test the proposed findeings by means of empirical evidence taken at company level. The obtained results will be used to answer a number of policy relvant questions regarding transport and mobility by means of simulations (e.g. Which government measures will influence the logistic trade-off between road and inland waterways? Whichgovenment actions will convince logistic managers to opt for inland waterways or rail instead of raodtransport?) | | Duration | 01/10/2003 - 31/12/2004 | | Researcher(s) | | | Research Team(s) | |
