Eindcompetenties (eindtermen) By the end of the course students should be able to use the formal apparatus for writing and interpreting the rules that account for the phonological processes operative in present-day English. 3. Inhoud This course aims at providing a thorough analysis of the phonology of present-day English. Topics to be discussed include: (i) the phonemes and morphophonemics of English; (ii) distinctive features; (iii) suprasegmental phenomena; (iv) generative phonology; (v) the impact of Chomsky and Halle's SPE; (vi) diacritics and abbreviatory conventions; (vii) the abstractness controversy and the systematic phonemes of English; (viii) isolating phonological processes and writing phonological rules. 4.
