Bij aanvang van dit opleidingsonderdeel dient de student over de volgende competenties te beschikken: Specifieke aanvangscompetenties voor dit opleidingonderdeel:
Students taking this course should have completed the English Grammar and Proficiency courses of the current BA1 and BA2 curricula, or equivalent courses. The course assumes that students are familiar with grammatical analysis and terminology. The course is intended for students with a Dutch language background as it concentrates on specific problems of Dutch-speaking learners of English. The present course contains some materials that may not be of any relevance to learners with other language backgrounds. However, the course instructors will try and provide tasks and materials that meet the demands of students with a non-Dutch background but they cannot guarantee that this will always be possible.
2. Eindcompetenties
The purpose of this course is to develop the students' skills in both spoken and written English at an advanced level. By the end of the course students should also have developed skills in identifying, correcting and suggesting remedies for mistakes and problems in other people's language production.
3. Inhoud
Each student is required to give an oral presentation based on a collection of newspaper articles on a specific topic. Written proficiency is enhanced through a number of tasks (translations from and into English, writing letters, précis, e-mails.) Students are also required to transcribe a portion of spoken English (from a videotaped TV-programme). In class, points of English grammar and usage (with a special focus on concrete vocabulary) are introduced and discussed. Students are also asked to give critical feedback on each others' performance.
