2. Eindcompetenties
A better understanding of how English is different from the other Germanic languages and of the ways linguists describe and explain these diferences.
3. Inhoud
The course aims to have a closer look at the properties which set English apart from its Germanic sister languages. Following John A. Hawkins’ A comparative typology of English and German. Unifying the contrasts. (London: Croom Helm, 1986) the course successively discusses (i) nominal paradigms, (ii) word order, (iii) syntactic and semantic functions, (iv) ‘raising’ and ‘dislocation’ structures, and (v) the position of the verb. The course also pays attention to verbal paradigms.
