3. Inhoud
Can you be an Anglicist without having looked Beowulf or Grendel in the eye, in the original language? No, you can't. This course will provide you with at least some of the linguistic background needed for a walk on the Anglo-Saxon wild side. This course acquaints you with the earlier stages of English and it sketches some of the major historical processes. With respect to earlier stages of English, attention will go to both Middle English and Old English, but the focus will be on the latter - because Old English is so much more like a "foreign language". The course will survey the essentials of the grammar. You will be confronted with texts of increasing complexity. You will thus acquire a minimal reading competence and a taste of the literature and culture of a thousand years ago.
