Qualification awarded
In order to obtain the degree of Master of Science in Governance and Development the student
  • should be enrolled for the programme in question under a diploma contract or under an exam contract to obtain a diploma
  • should have taken all the exams that the programme encompasses
  • should previously have registered for the programme with the examination board.
  • should have acquired at least 60 ECTS-credits
The programme consists of 60 ECTS-credits.
In a model academic year, the student takes between 54 and 66 ECTS-credits.
Admission requirements
Admission through co-ordinator : academic degree of minimum 4 years (political sciences, sociology, economics, international relations...).

Applicants from developing countries are eligible to apply for the Master’s programmes provided they:

  • hold one or more university degrees of at least four years of combined study in the Social Sciences (Economics, Political Science, Sociology, International Relations or related disciplines) with good study results. Applicants with a university degree of only three years of study may very exceptionally be admitted, provided they have successfully completed additional high-level training and can demonstrate very strong and relevant professional experience. 
  • have at least two years of professional experience in a sector relevant to the programme. 

Applicants from developed countries are eligible to apply for the Master’s programmes provided they: 

  • hold a Master’s degree in the Social Sciences (Economics, Political Science, Sociology, International Relations or related disciplines) with good study results.  
  • demonstrate a proven interest in development issues. 

LANGUAGE
Applicants must be proficient in English. Those who have received a university education in English must provide an official certificate confirming this. Other applicants must submit one of the following test results:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): minimum score of 550 for paper-based test or 79 for Internet-based test. Information about this test is available at www.toefl.org
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): minimum score of 6.0. Information about this test is available at www.ielts.org.

Special facilities are offered for students from other language backgrounds (in particular for French speaking students). Students with paper-based TOEFL scores between 500 and 550 (or Internet-based TOEFL score between 61 and 79) or IELTS scores between 5.0 and 6.0 may thus be admitted provided they successfully complete a two-month intensive language course organised by the University of Antwerp before the start of the Master’s programme. The cost of this language course is borne by the Institute.


Objectives and learning outcomes
The study programme analyses governance problems and possible responses with due account of specific historical pathways of countries and the interaction between the national state level, local society level dynamics and the impact of global developments. The objective of the Master’s programme is to provide the students with multidisciplinary theoretical insights and practical tools that will improve their capacity to analyse governance challenges at different levels and how they relate to processes of violent conflict and development. Graduates will understand and be able to analyse, from the local to the global level, the governance problems confronting developing countries today. Theoretical insights, policy strategies and best practices as well as failures are explored in order that graduates could apply this knowledge in their future professional environments.
Final examination
A student’s final result is a weighted average of the exam results the student has obtained for all the programme components of his/her training programme. In calculating the final result, the credits corresponding to the various programme components are used for weighting the results obtained for those components.

The final result is expressed as an integer out of 100.

A student whose final result is less than 50 out of 100 can never be declared successful.

A student is successful for the training programme if he/she has obtained credits for all the programme components in his/her training programme.
