1. Aanvangscompetenties

2. Eindcompetenties
After this course students should be able to:
- explain and apply the main concepts, insights and paradigma of monetary economics
- explain and evaluate the main controversies in monetary economics
- explain and evaluate monetary policy of the main central banks (especially the European Central Bank).
In general, this course should enable students to better understand and critically evaluate monetary and financial developments.
3. Inhoud
The course is composed of three, not necessarily equal, parts. The first part is devoted to the building blocs of monetary analysis: money concepts, money supply and demand, the transmission mechanism of monetary policy. In the second part we deal with the main controversies in monetary policy: the final goals of monetary policy, the debate on rules versus discretion in monetary policy, central bank independence and accountability. The third part examines international monetary economics, including exchange rate determination and the balance of payments, exchange rate policy, and monetary policy in a monetary union. In each part special emphasis will be put on recent debates and developments; e.g. the financial crisis of 2008-09.
