The most important authors, themes and schools in theoretical and practical philosophy from Descartes till now are treated. The students should know these historical landmarks and be able to evaluate in general terms their importance for the mainstream discussions in contemporary philosophy.

3. Course content
The course starts with an overview of 17th century rationalism and empiricism (with special attention for Descartes and Locke); then follows an overview of 18th century Enlightenment (both Scottish and French) and of the keyfigure Immanuel Kant. In part II of this course the 19th century is focused on, starting with Hegel and ending with William James. In a last part the following schools and tendencies are treated: positivism, phenomenology and hermeneutics (Husserl and Heidegger), the linguistic turn by Wittgenstein, naturalism and reductionism, post-modernism and the critic of naturalism (Taylor, Rorty).
