2. Objectives (expected learning outcomes)
This first contact with the field of applied ethics should enable students to get the broad picture of what applied ethics is all about.
Students should also be able to develop a sound moral reasoning about a specific applied ethics problem. They have to demonstrate this capacity in an oral as well as a written manner.

3. Course content
Point of departure is the anthology by Hugh LaFollette, Ethics in practice. Several domains in the field of applied ethics enter the picture: animal rights, bio-ethical problems, justice problems, environmental ethics, etc. Each topic is illustrated by 3 or 4 texts that have to be read by all the students. Students are expected (1) to participate in seminar discussions; (2) they are asked to take up one topic and given a presentation of one hour. The following hour is taken up by the teacher who further develops upon the topic and extends the discussion. After their presentation students are asked (3) to develop their primary text into a seminar paper of max 15p. This paper is discussed during the oral exam.
