2. Objectives (expected learning outcomes)
Brief cognitive acquisition of grammatical and lexical building blocks for effective communication in German. Intensive practice of those insights on the basis of varied and increasingly complex texts relating to socioeconomics. Development of oral competency through a step-by-step system of practical sessions, consecutive translation, and situation-specific conversations.
3. Course content
1. Active knowledge of general and specific basic German vocabulary (500 most frequent words in their most frequent collocations).
2. Active knowledge of the grammatical building blocks of German sentences, with concentric development from word to word group, from word group to sentence, from sentence to text.
3. Comprehension of and (assisted) speaking about texts from the quality media and relating to general or German socioeconomic issues.

Interim assignments
Acquisition of the basic vocabulary of 500 words through self-study. In order to guarantee the continuity of this learning process, students should strive to make the following progress.
By the beginning of December: all 500 headwords (= approx. 8 per day).
By the end of February: words 1-300
By the beginning of May: words 1-500
At the end of each of these periods, and in consultation with the students, tentative tests shall be taken.
