2. Objectives (expected learning outcomes)
The course is designed to provide students with the basic concepts of theater and dramaturgy from a historical context. The course aims to give students a clear insight into the most important evolutions in Western theater from antiquity to the eigtheenth century.



3. Course content
This course will examine the ¿theater¿ in the broad context of society by surveying major critical works from the antiquity (Greece and Rome) and in Western-Europe during the Middle-Ages and the early modern age. By focusing on structural analysis and performance-centered criticism of diverse plays in context, this course will engage students in dramaturgy. Some of the key focal points will be: the literary aspects, drama theory, stage-managing, theater, status of the actors, spectacle, the public, the social context and related phenomena like pageantry, theater as a means of propaganda and as a reflection of society and politics.
