1. Prerequisites *Algemene competenties
*Sequentiality Download sequentiality table
2. Objectives (expected learning outcomes) At the end of this course the student should - have an understanding of the link between symmetry and physical and chemical properties - be able to describe crystalline materials with the correct parameters and charateristics - be able to determine the point group, Bravais lattice, space group, reflection conditions and structure factors of given materials - be able to solve simple crystal structures from experimental data - have a basic knowledge of different diffraction techniques
3. Course content The course in crystallography gives the students an introduction to the description and determination of the structure of crystalline materials. The topics include: description of crystalline materials in real and reciprocal space, geometrical crystallography, symmetry, point groups and lattices, space groups, coordination, close packing and the ralation between structure and physical properties. Finally a chapter in diffraction is seen. During the exercises the concepts are applied to materials that are technologically interesting, appear also in other courses, or are expected to belong to the general basic knowledge.
4. Teaching method Direct contact: LecturesExercise sessionsPractical sessions Personal work: ExercisesPortfolio
5. Assessment method Exam: Written, without oral presentationClosed bookMultiple choiceOpen questions Continuous assessment: Exercises(Interim) tests Portfolio: Without oral presentation
6. Compulsory reading – study material Course available at the course services.
