a. Scientific competences
The Master is offered a scientifically deepening and broadening training in the domain of maritime and transportation law, in which the legal approach is essentially supplemented with an economic component. This training wants to give insight into the actual, relevant scientific knowledge and skills in this field. The training programme is driven by scientific research and experience of juridical practice. It is also based on the knowledge provided by the Antwerp transport and harbour companies.
The Master is able to approach and integrate his/her own basic discipline in a multidisciplinary approach.
The Master has acquired a sufficiently broad scientific basis to describe concrete juridical and economic consequences, to provide a juridically and economically solid basis for his/her point of view, to describe concrete policy problems and to give arguments for practicable solutions. As such the Master has the basic competency ‘problem-solving thinking’ which the Flemish government has decreed as being of primary importance.
b. Professional competences
The Master should be able to implement his/her scientific competences (knowledge, skills, attitudes) in a professional and independent way.
The master should have the attitude to keep his competences at a high level through lifelong learning.
On a ‘professional’ level, the master of Maritime and Transport Law has the competences ‘resultdriven’, ‘objectivity’, ‘power of persuasion’ and ‘reliability’. The master will consider expertise and effectiveness to be very important. These attitudes are sharpened in seminars.
c. Social competences
Shipping and transportation have a big impact on society and they are themselves strongly influenced by the general development in society. Social competences are therefore very important in the programma of Maritime and Transportation Law.
The master aims to gain insight in relevant social processes and their consequences on macro and meso level (e.g. responsabilising and increase in scale, durability, globalisation, employment, economic growth and prosperity). These themes are fundamentally present in the economic analysis and in the legislation about transport and port.
d. Reflective competences
Starting from the above mentioned social competences, the graduated Master in Maritime and Transportation Law has a rational reflex and a critical attitude. His/Her insights give him/her the strength and courage to realize important initiatives.
From an ethical and human concern, the master is concerned with the general prosperity of society. From a global-multicultural point of view he has an international attitude which is evident in the world of shipping and transportation. From an ecological point of view he has eye for the external effects of transport and harbour on the environment. The Master in Maritime and Transportation Law will have the reflective competences to give prosperity, global peace and durability the place it deserves in his function.
