Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature should have the following competences, skills and attitudes: Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature will attain a level of reasoning and thinking capacity that enables them to adequately gather information, interpret and integrate it in broad contexts, to connect the acquired information with the acquired expertise in language, culture and literature. Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature are able to critically and reflectively deal with knowledge and insights. Also their problem solving skills will enable them to identify and adequately formulate scientific problems from their field, and solve them with the most recent insights. Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature will have an open and inquisitive attitude: their working material has a rather dynamic character, the field that hires them is also variable and diversified. An attentively inquisitive attitude and great flexibility will be indispensable. Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature have a thorough active and passive knowledge of at least one language. This entails the insight into the pragmatic conditions of that language, and the command of different variants, adapted to specific contexts and genres. Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature have developed considerable skills of text analysis and literary interpretation, and the insight into the historical evolution of at least one literature. Moreover, Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature have general knowledge of the cultures associated with the chosen languages, c.q. the specific sensitivities as they have developed within these cultures. Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature have also acquired practical cultural experience in at least one language/culture. Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature have acquired global knowledge of the western cultural tradition from Antiquity to the Modern Times, of the philosophical insights in that tradition and the ideas on art and literature. The competences also include theoretical knowledge that, however, is always practically-oriented in relation to the three main genres. Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature are able to situate particular literary texts in a literary tradition and/or movement. Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature are capable of focused linguistic analyses using adequate and rational methods of analysis. They are also able to apply insights to new language material, and to the critical interpretation of linguistic phenomena. Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature are able to produce scientific, vulgarising, journalistic and publicity texts, on paper as well as electronically: this type of production implies correct treatment of sources, skill in detecting, selecting and processing information; also skills in editing text materials is required. Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature are able to transfer knowledge and skills in relation to language, culture and literature (proficiency, reading, speaking). Mostly for direct application and usage, Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature will be able to transfer in some cases information about language and literature and skills in language proficiency in al less formal context. Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature can adequately use bibliographies, repertoires, databases and other heuristic aids; in any case Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature will correctly find access to reliable and adequate sources in the context of their assignments. Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature will very often operate in international or multilingual settings. Therefore, students will be encouraged to take a part of their training at a foreign institute. For the non-exchange students an international dimension is created, f.i. by attracting foreign guest lecturers.
Also in view of the problems of enduring development, a part of the efforts towards internationalization will have a specific North-South dimension. This orientation is based on the explicit intention to contribute to the development of critical reflection of the Bachelors of Linguistics and Literature. Their position in society is rather significant for the forming of public opinion. The presence of training modules that enhance critical reflection will definitely be used for highlighting the relation of man, nature and society, in a future-oriented perspective.
