General A Master of Linguistics and Literature has the skill to set up and (for the most part independently) carry out scientific subresearch, coached by an experienced researcher. Heuristic skills A Master of Linguistics and Literature has heuristic skills:
- he/she is able to gather and select professional scientific literature, and also to gather, select and process data in function of research (primary literature, documentes, corpora, questionnaires, etc. depending on the domain of research).
- he/she is able to situate texts and other documents in their context (historically, ideologically, stylistically), to recognise the type of text or document and to take this into account when interpreting it.
- he/she knows the current methodological approaches within his/her domain of research
- he/she has the necessary knowledge about literature and publications in their subject area (magazines, websites and other digital sources, …)
Knowledge A Master of Linguistics and Literature has the necessary background knowledge to place his/her research within his/her own field and is able to estimate its relevance and originality:
- he/she is familiar with the most important theories in the subject area, current ones as well as less current ones and is able to easily use the basic notions in his/her domain of research.
- he/she is familiar with the most important primary literature within his/her subject area (literary texts, texts by linguistic or other authors).
- he/she is familiar with the most important current relevant questions in the subject area.
- he/she can place his/her own subject area in relation to other relevant scientific domains (philosophy, psychology, sociology, history, but also economic or “exact” sciences) and is able to deal with interaction between the different scientific domains
- he/she has basic insights in the structure and functioning of the language in which he/she writes the master thesis and is able to reflect on the structure and the use of language
Communicative skills Moreover, a Master of Linguistics and Literature has acquired linguistic and communication skills
- to report, both orally and in writing including electronic reporting
- to write argumentative texts and to effectively participate in discussions about his/her subject area
- to formulate a scientific question as clearly and accurately as possible as a starting point for his/her own research
Attitudes A Master of Linguistics and Literature is expected
- to have developed considerable powers of analysis and interpretation.
- to have a critical attitude towards the scientific quality and social relevance of his/her own research
- to have a critical attitude towards the developments in the domains of research and in the relevant scientific and cultural context.
Finally, also a critical orientation in the broad cultural, political and social context is one of the competences to be pursued.
