1. Prerequisites *Algemene competenties
Students
have a good introduction-level knowledge of Italian linguistics, and
are capable of adequately describing and analysing linguistic data
(bibliographies, grammars) and can pinpoint grammatical variation
between normative prescriptive grammar and practical usage.
*Sequentiality
This
course is offered in the programme of Romance Languages, Literatures
and Linguistics for the students of the old "licentiaatsprogramma"; it
is furthermore offered in the third year of the Bachelor programme
where it continues the formation in Italian linguistics of the second
year of the bachelor programme.
2. Objectives (expected learning outcomes)
With
this course, students will acquire the academic skills to correctly
describe and interpret the linguistic variation that is currently found
in the Italian territory. Students will become acquainted with the
terminology and the fundamental notions and problems in sociolinguistic
research, and will be able to use these theoretical notions as concrete
tools for analyses of linguistically diverse material.
3. Course content
This course will start with an
overview of contemporary Italian sociolinguistics. Four parameters of
sociolinguistic variation will be considered in greater depth:
- diatopical variation
- diastratical variation
- diafasical variation
- diamesical variation
The theoretical concepts will be illustrated using concrete and diversified linguistic material.
Students
will become familiar with the range of linguistic variation, and will
be able to pinpoint similar variation in texts. Both written and spoken
texts will be considered and taken into account.
