2. Objectives (expected learning outcomes) After taking this course, students should be able to:
1. Apply microeconomic concepts and theories to analyze relevant social-economic problems 2. Evaluate government policies within a logically-consistent framework 3. Analyze economic problems in a variety of sectors, including education, transport, public enterprises, health, optimal taxation, environmental regulation, etc.
3. Course content The course content may vary from one year to another. A stylized overview is as follows:
1. Introduction: role of the public sector 2. Instruments of public policy analysis 3. Regulation and intervention on a single market 4. Policy applications of models of individual behaviour 5. Costs, productivity and efficiency in the public sector 6. Normative and positive aspects of pricing and investment in the public sector 7. Economic decisions under uncertainty: introductory concepts 8. Asymmetric information and public sector decisions 9. Externalities and government regulation
