Course detail 2009-2010

Profile of the programme
All of us encounter philosophical questions once in a while.  Some of them come from our own experience and lead us to question the deeper meaning of our existence, and of the World.  Other philosophical questions are a consequence of problems caused by culture and society that even experts cannot always answer.  This is obvious for ethical questions.  Other philosophical questions are situated in the margins of scientific activity, pertaining to the diverse methods of knowledge acquisition in different scientific branches, or to the basic concepts used in science to think about nature and mankind.  This university programme is for those who wish to think over these and many other questions in a critical and responsible way.

Philosophers in the making must not only (further) sharpen their critical thinking and communicative skills.  A thorough knowledge of philosophical tradition, insight into the fundamental aspects of humanity and familiarity with the fundamental structures of cultural and social life are necessary.  This is why the course is made up of different components.  Five components (Skills, History of Philosophy, Systematic Philosophy, Philosophical Literature and Non-philosophical subjects) make up a solid, broad philosophical base.  A sixth elective component offers the student the opportunity to personalise his philosophical reasoning.
Occupational profiles of graduates
Approximately half of the graduates find work in a philosophical field: they teach Philosophy or do philosophical research.  The other half work in many different areas.  You will find them in the cultural sector, in the service industry, business, healthcare, journalism, etc.
