Course detail 2009-2010

Profile of the programme
This programme is an academic programme that follows a bachelor in nursing or obstetrics organised by a college.  The academic fulfilment takes place at the University of Antwerp, in cooperation with the ‘Artesis Hogeschool’, ‘Karel De Grote Hogeschool’, and the ‘Hogeschool Zeeland’ (The Netherlands).  This cooperation within the ‘Associatie Universiteit Antwerpen’ with an international partner opens the door for an innovative approach to this new course.
Occupational profiles of graduates

Graduates have a large sector of the job market to find work in, such as hospitals, health centres, domiciliary care, health insurers, government organisations active in the field of healthcare, and research institutes.  Fields of action: coordination of the renewal of healthcare, quality management in healthcare, healthcare policies, advice positions in healthcare and healthcare research.  Positions that the course will prepare you for: clinical head, researcher, evidence based expert and academic.

  • As a clinical head you will develop and lead management and innovation for complex care issues and situations: leading an organisational unit, research into organisational interventions and organisational culture, and developing leadership and research aspects within certain care situations as an expert
  • As a researcher you choose a career in research.  You participate in research and research networks at universities and colleges, healthcare organisations, the government or other organisations or institutions.  You could obtain a doctorate in new domains.
  • A an evidence-based expert, you develop the expertise that you share with others as a consultant, you develop the best fitting care program and interventions based on evidence from sound scientific research and manage the quality of healthcare in the broadest sense.

In all of the above mentioned positions, the Master in nursing and obstetrics works as an academic caregiver.  This role especially comes to the foreground in the attitude with which you carry out these tasks.  The attitude of lifelong learning is central in this, besides enterprise, objectivity, and a critical, questioning attitude.
