Qualification awarded
In order to obtain the degree of Bachelor of Law the student
  • should be enrolled for the programme in question under a diploma contract or under an exam contract to obtain a diploma
  • should have taken all the exams that the programme encompasses
  • should previously have registered for the programme with the examination board.
  • should have acquired at least 180 ECTS-credits
The programme consists of 180 ECTS-credits.
In a model academic year, the student takes between 54 and 66 ECTS-credits.

diploma of secondary education or equivalent on the basis of the stipulations of the institution's access procedure or a diploma of higher education of one cycle with a complete learning programme or a diploma of higher education of social promotion
Objectives
a) Scientific competences
 
The Bachelor of Law has a basic knowledge of and insight in the foundations, principles and structures of the most important legal subject areas. He/she also has a basic insight into the interaction of Belgian, European and the international systems of law, which should enable him/her to see that his/her own legal system in its connection to the context of time and place.
 
The bachelor is familiar with the sources of law, is capable of autonomously consulting legal sources and is able to process the gathered information in a scientifically sound way. He/she is able to identify rules of law and problems of law. He/she has an inquisitive attitude towards the orgainsation of human life and society
 
The bachelor has general intellectual skills such as logical thinking, analyzing and synthesizing texts, writing an essay, holding and participating in initiating legal debates, reporting of companies.
 
The bachelor has an eye for the developments of his/her own level of knowledge, is able to to learn through self-study and experience. He/she is capable of critical reflection upon law and society.
 
The bachelor has insight in all the factors that contribute to the establishment of the law.
 
b) Professional competences with academic thinking level
 
The bachelor is able to express him/herself well, orally and in writing, in the Dutch language. He/she is familiar with legal terminology in Dutch, French, English and German.
The bachelor is able to correctly express legal concepts and ideas and develop a simple juridical argumentation. He/she is able to write simple legal texts and/or reports with a juridical approach.
 
The bachelor has practical skills oriented towards the increasing informatisation of society and in particular of law. He/she has interpersonal skills such as: being able to work in a team, attending meetings. He/she is capable of clear communication, both to jurists and to a non-specialist audience.

The bachelor is aware of the growing importance of the internationalisation and europeanisation of the law and goes in search of legal sources in this subject area.
 
c) Social and reflective competences
 
The Bachelor of Law is generally formed in the domain of man and society and has a basic insight into the economical, social and political factors that influence the legal system and help shape society. He/she has a global insight into history and philosophy and has knowledge of and insight into the historical backgrounds of law and the basics principles and philosophical foundations of law. He/she is prepared to maintain and develop his/her own knowledge.
 
The bachelor has a critical attitude towards law and its functioning in society. He/she is open for new legal concepts and legal concepts of other legal systems that influence positive law and dares to question positive law.
 
The bachelor has an open view on the world and society and is always striving for true dialogues in the context of a pluralistic attitude of respect for different philosophical convictions.
 
The bachelor is imbued with the philosophy of sustainable development.

Postgraduate in Fiscal Studies

Further studies with conditional access

Final examination
A student’s final result is a weighted average of the exam results the student has obtained for all the programme components of his/her training programme. In calculating the final result, the credits corresponding to the various programme components are used for weighting the results obtained for those components.

The final result is expressed as an integer out of 100.

A student whose final result is less than 50 out of 100 can never be declared successful.

A student is successful for the Bachelor’s programme if he/she has obtained credits for all the programme components in his/her training programme.
 
The examination board can declare a student who has not obtained credits for all the programme components successful if it can substantiate why it believes that the objectives of the programme have been achieved.
