The common commercial policy is one of the pillars of the external relations of the European Union. Relying on the rules of the customs union it regulates the trade relations of the member states with third countries. The trade policy of the European Union aims to (internally) strengthen the competitiveness of Europe and (externally) exploit the chances of international openness. This also responds to two objectives of the Lisbon Strategy, namely growth and employment and meeting the challenge of globalization.
