1. Prerequisites *Algemene competenties Introduction to philosophy is required.
This course is delivered in co-operation with the faculty of Biology. An introduction to the relevant topics of contemporary biological sciences for non-specialists will be provided at the beginning of the course series.

2. Objectives (expected learning outcomes) This course wants to introduce the students to the main topics of ethical discussion raised by the progress in biological sciences. It aims at criticial reflection, rather than trying to offer clear-cut answers to the sometimes complex ethical issues raised from a societal and cultural perspective by the impact of biotechnology and the remarkable revolution in the knowledge of biology.
3. Course content
After 4 hours of introduction to contemporary ethics and bio-ethics, and a 2-hour introduction to the relevant aspects of Biology, various topics are treated in seminar form. These topics change every year and are announced 'ad valvas' by the end of January.
In past years, these themes have been a. o.: animal rights; patenting genes and organisms; ethical aspects of stem cell research; biodiversity and responsibility of mankind; scientific research and justice. Experts will be invited to give talks in seminar form on each of these topics
