1. Prerequisites *Algemene competenties
Knowledge of the main themes and figures in the history of western philosophy is required.

2. Objectives (expected learning outcomes) Knowledge of and insight into the main definitions of metaphysics provided by the tradition of western philosophy including Hegel, and of the main radical critiques on metaphysics in contemporary philosophy since Hegel.
3. Course content The first part will be an introduction into the philosophical import of five main definitions of metaphysics, defended by Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, Descartes, Kant and Hegel. In the second part, we will discuss the main radical critiques on metaphysics, investigate the meaning of 'the end of metaphysics', and Heidegger's overcoming metaphysics will be introduced.
