1. Prerequisites

This Master seminar builds on knowledge, skills and competences in ethics and the history of philosophical anthropology gained during the bachelors. The general framework of the courses is the Anglo-American theory of the emotions. No specific knowledge of this model is required.

2. Objectives (expected learning outcomes)
- To gain insight in the theory of the emotions of resp. Aristotle, Hume and contemporary moral psychology (esp. Jesse Prinz);
- Understand the relevance of an integrated theory of the emotions for the development of normative ethics;
- To be able to apply this insight on the analysis of some basic moral emotions, such as guilt and shame; sympathy and love).



3. Course content



The courses start from a text syllabus with relevant articles on Aristotle's, Hume's and contemporary theories of the (moral) emotions (esp. Jesse Prinz). 
There wil be a guest course in December by the famous Australian-British philosopher Raimond Gaita. The students are also invited to attend some lectures of the colloquium
 'Moral Psychology in the Scottish Enlightenment' (12-13 october). They can write a paper on a theme brought foreward on one of the lectures of this conference. 
The content of the other courses will be communicated in detail in september 2010.
