In order to obtain the degree of Master of Applied Economic Sciences: Business Administration the student
- should be enrolled for the programme in question under a diploma contract or under an exam contract to obtain a diploma
- should have taken all the exams that the programme encompasses
- should previously have registered for the programme with the examination board.
- should have acquired at least 60 ECTS-credits
The programme consists of 60 ECTS-credits.
In a model academic year, the student takes between 54 and 66 ECTS-credits.

The Master of Applied Economic Sciences (AES)-Business Administration aims for the following learning outcomes:
- Mastering general competences at an advanced level:
- The academically trained master of AES-business administration distinguishes him/herself by a broad and specific scientifically founded knowledge and by a set of academic skills. This appears from a.o. his/her capacity of logical reasoning, the scientific way of thinking and acting, the ability to deal with complex problems and the reflection on the development of possible solutions, the reduction of unstructered problems into practical research questions and argument of the proposed solution(s).
- The master can quickly and efficiently detect and synthesize information (literature or data) on a certain topic in order to take decisions in the organisation in which he/she works and he/she can draft a clear picture of the policy options for this organisation.
- The master is characterized by his/her open intellectual attitude, he/she has an eye for the diversity (and the contradictions) of social stands and perspectives, he/she can review these critically and take a personal stand.
- The master can distinguish the complex ethical aspects of social and economic actions in society and can critically reflect and advise on them.
- Mastering general scientific competences at an advanced level:
- The master can clearly express social problem definitions in economic and business economic terms, translate them into research questions, formulate hypotheses about them and give a solid theoretical basis for these.
- Starting from a problem, the master can select the appropriate research method, collect qualitative and quantitative data and process, analyze and critically evaluate them.
- An advanced understanding of and insight in scientific-disciplinary knowledge:
- The master can develop and work out research and policy plans in relation to economic and business economic problems.
- The master can clearly and qualitatively report the research findings both in writing (publication in a scientific magazine, policy reports) and orally (presentation at a conference, seminar, staff meeting,…). He/she is also able to actively participate in scientific meetings.
- Independence:
- The master programme AES-business administration trains students who, once graduated, can function at an academic level and are able to perform independent scientific research.
- The master has general and profession-specific competences to work autonomously in management supporting functions, in research and management functions, in education, in public relations, in executive functions, … and this in the public as well as the private sector.
- International orientation:
- The master knows the international organisations and structures that co-direct economic policy and the globalisation of business.
- The master is able to follow the international development of knowledge in his/her field and can participate in it.
Competences
The student receives a scientific in depth traning in the domain of business administration in a chosen specialty (accountancy and audit, management information systems, finance, international management and diplomacy, marketing, strategy and organisation, research methodology, production management, transport economy and logistics). The training wants to give students insight in the current scientific knowledge and skills in the domain of business administration and the chosen specialty. The programme is clearly and visibly supported by scientific research.
In order to realize the learning outcomes the master student AES-business administration has to acquire the following competences:
- The master knows the basic concepts and theories of the discipline-specific subjects in which he/she specializes and can describe the state of the international scientific discussion and the most recent developments.
- The master is able to systematically collect and critically process sources and research literature on a specific (business) economic policy problem from a multidisciplinary perspective.
- Based on analytical insight and methodological training, the master can scientifically formulate a research question, draft a research set up, collect and process (empirical) data and reach well-founded conclusions and this both individually and as part of a team. He/she knows the possibilities and the limitations of quantitative and qualitative research methods.
Since the master AES-business administration is an academic master programme, the acquisition of scientific competences is one of the objectives of the programme. Most graduates will of course find themselves in an organisation, either in the private or in the public sector. In order to function in the different functions the graduates need to have acquired profession-oriented competences at the end of their training. Professional and profession oriented competences
The Master has to be able to use/implement his/her scientific competences (knowledge, skills, attitudes) in a professional and independent way, while preparing, making and following business-economic management decisions. It is important that this can be done in a great diversity of professional situations (in profit and non-profit organisations) and in a great diversity of functions.
4. The master can critically evaluate scientific research and translate it into practical policy recommendations in a great diversity of professional situations (in profit and non-profit organisations) and in a great diversity of functions.
Social and communicative competence - The master wants to acquire
- insight in contemporary social developments (such as globalisation, sustainable development, privatisation, cultural diversity)
- new insights resulting from business-scientific research
- insight in the relevance of social and business-scientific developments for different management functions.
The master should develop and learn to apply these competences in a national and an international context.
5. The master further develops his/her academic core skills (such as autonomous analyzing and synthesizing, autonomous reasoning, evaluation and communication) and recognizes the importance of self-study and lifelong learning.
6. The master can communicate and report purposefully both orally and in writing and both interpersonally and in groups.
7. The master can take initiative and can work out assignments creatively.
8. The master is aware of the interaction between broad social change and the functioning of organisations.
9. The master has an eye for the social consequences of business administrative decisions.
10. The master is able to critically apply scientific insights and acquired knowledge about business administrative methods in an international context and to reach business administrative solutions for organisations in the private, public or non-profit sector and this in collaboration with people from different cultures.
Reflective competences
The master is a scientific programme with an emphasis on providing insights and on understanding problems in a methodologically effective and efficient way. The master programme also has the objective to reflect from an ethical perspective on the position of the manager in society, on the development within business and on sustainability questions in a globalizing economy.
11. The master has a positive attitude and founded knowledge that enable him/her to function humanely and creatively in a multicultural society and working environment.
12. The master has an independent and critical attitude whereby he recognizes in which circumstances it is important to think independently, rationally and interdisciplinary.

A student’s final result is a weighted average of the exam results the student has obtained for all the programme components of his/her training programme. In calculating the final result, the credits corresponding to the various programme components are used for weighting the results obtained for those components.
The final result is expressed as an integer out of 100.
A student whose final result is less than 50 out of 100 can never be declared successful.
A student is successful for the training programme if he/she has obtained credits for all the programme components in his/her training programme.
